John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, served from 1841 to 1845. He assumed the presidency after the death of President William Henry Harrison, making him the first Vice President to succeed to the presidency due to the death of a predecessor. A former Democrat who became a Whig, Tyler faced challenges in gaining the support of both parties during his presidency. His term was marked by contentious issues, including conflicts with the Whig-controlled Congress over economic policies and the reestablishment of an independent Treasury. One of the significant events during his presidency was the annexation of Texas in 1845, which had lasting implications for the nation. Tyler's tenure was marked by political struggles and ultimately ended with his departure from office in 1845, setting a precedent for future vice presidents who ascended to the presidency due to the death or resignation of a sitting president.
