John C. Calhoun was a prominent American statesman and political theorist who played a crucial role in the antebellum period. Serving as the seventh Vice President under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, Calhoun was a strong advocate for states' rights and the institution of slavery. Born in South Carolina in 1782, he was deeply involved in national politics for several decades. Calhoun's political career was marked by a shift from nationalist positions, supporting protective tariffs and internal improvements early in his career, to becoming a leading proponent of states' rights later on. He is perhaps best known for his theory of nullification, which argued that states had the right to nullify federal laws they deemed unconstitutional. As tensions over the issue of slavery escalated, Calhoun's ideas contributed to the sectional strife that eventually led to the American Civil War. His legacy is complex, as he is remembered as both a brilliant political thinker and a staunch defender of the institution of slavery, which makes him a controversial figure in American history.
