James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, assumed office in 1857, serving during a tumultuous period leading up to the American Civil War. A Democrat from Pennsylvania, Buchanan's presidency faced mounting tensions between the Northern and Southern states over the issue of slavery. Despite his experience in foreign affairs, Buchanan struggled to address the growing sectional divide. His administration is often criticized for its perceived inability to prevent the outbreak of the Civil War. Buchanan believed that the federal government lacked the authority to intervene in state matters related to slavery, and his handling of the secession crisis has been a subject of historical scrutiny. As the nation teetered on the brink of conflict, Buchanan's presidency ultimately concluded in 1861, leaving a complex legacy defined by the challenges of a nation on the verge of division.
