A beautiful elaborate fleur de lis scrollwork decorative border surrounds the image, with a tiny vignette at the top of the portrait image. The vignette may represent the family coat of arms or crest.The celtic like ornamental perimeter scrollwork surrounding the portrait is a beautiful work of art, typical of a John Tallis type production. A great historical portrait print for a genealogy buff looking for family heritage or royalty type prints. Richard Weston, 1st Earl of Portland, (1577-1634), born Roxwell in Essex, England, eldest son and heir of Sir Hierome Weston, High Sheriff of Essex, and Mary Cave. During the reign of King James I of England, Richard was sent on embassies to Bohemia, Brussels, and Spain. On the last assignment, he negotiated for the restitution of the Palatine. Upon his return to England, Richard was made Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was elevated to the peerage on April 13, 1628, as Baron Weston of Neyland. He was subsequently made Lord Treasurer of England and invested with the Order of the Garter. On February 17, 1633, Sir Richard was created Earl of Portland. His lordship was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Pinchon of Writtle in Essex. And, his second wife was Frances Walgrave of Boreley in Essex. He had three children by his first marriage, and eight by his second. The Earl of Portland died in 1634, and he was succeeded by his second and eldest surviving son, Jerome Weston, 2nd Earl of Portland. CONDITION: Suitable age toning. Very Good Condition. Portrait Image area is clean, clear and sharp with beautiful detail and in Excellent Condition. Blank on Reverse side and printed heavier paper.
