Hernando de Soto's expedition in the early 16th century stands as a milestone in the exploration of North America. In 1539, De Soto, accompanied by a substantial expedition, embarked on a journey through the southeastern United States in search of wealth and new territories. The pinnacle of his exploration came in May 1541 when the expedition, becoming the first documented Europeans to do so, discovered and crossed the mighty Mississippi River. This geographical achievement not only expanded European knowledge of the continent but also had far-reaching implications for the encounters between European explorers and indigenous peoples. De Soto's interactions with various Native American tribes along the way, including the Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Quapaw, shaped the complex and often tumultuous history of European exploration and Native American relations in the Americas. The discovery of the Mississippi River marked a crucial moment in the unfolding narrative of cross-cultural encounters and the ongoing exploration of the New World. Published by Johnson Fry & Co.
