George Henry Thomas, born on July 31, 1816, in Southampton County, Virginia, was a distinguished career United States Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War. Often hailed as one of the finest generals on either side of the conflict, Thomas earned the moniker "Rock of Chickamauga" for his unwavering defense during the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. His notable tactical skill and disciplined leadership played a pivotal role in securing a Union victory at the Battle of Missionary Ridge later that year. Beyond the battlefield, Thomas continued his military career, contributing significantly to the Reconstruction era after the Civil War. He passed away on March 28, 1870, and his legacy endures as a testament to his dedication and leadership during a tumultuous period in American history. George H.
