Descripción
Commodore Stephen Decatur's conflict with the Algerine (Barbary) forces at Tripoli was a defining episode during the First Barbary War in the early 19th century. In 1804, following the Battle of the Gunboat, Decatur led a daring and successful raid to destroy the captured American frigate USS Philadelphia, which had fallen into the hands of Tripolitan pirates. Under the cover of darkness, Decatur and a small group of volunteers boarded the captured frigate, set it ablaze, and successfully escaped with minimal casualties. The daring raid earned Decatur national acclaim and the praise of then-President Thomas Jefferson, who referred to it as "the most bold and daring act of the age." Decatur's decisive actions in the Mediterranean showcased American naval prowess and determination against the Barbary States, contributing to the eventual end of the conflict and reinforcing the principle that the United States would not tolerate tribute payments to pirates.
