The Battle of Wilson's Creek, fought on August 10, 1861, near Springfield, Missouri, marked a significant early engagement in the American Civil War. It pitted Union forces, led by General Nathaniel Lyon, against Confederate troops commanded by General Sterling Price. This clash unfolded in the tumultuous border state of Missouri, where both Union and Confederate sympathies ran strong. The battle, also known as the "Bull Run of the West," witnessed intense fighting around Bloody Hill, a key topographical feature. General Lyon, a notable Union commander, lost his life during the conflict. Despite Lyon's death, the Union forces initially held their ground, but ultimately, Confederate forces prevailed. The Battle of Wilson's Creek underscored the volatile nature of the Civil War in border states, where loyalties were divided, and guerrilla warfare became prevalent. The casualties suffered on both sides highlighted the brutality and toll of the early confrontations in a nation torn apart by civil strife. Published by Johnson Fry & Co. New York, 1868.
