The Battle of the Wilderness, fought from May 5 to 7, 1864, marked the opening engagement of the Overland Campaign during the American Civil War. Located in the dense and challenging terrain of the Wilderness in Virginia, the conflict pitted Union General Ulysses S. Grant against Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The battle was characterized by chaotic and brutal fighting in the thick woods, resulting in high casualties on both sides. Despite the lack of a clear tactical outcome, the confrontation set the stage for further clashes in the Overland Campaign. Following this, the Attack on Spotsylvania Court House unfolded from May 8 to 21, 1864. This phase of the campaign saw the Union and Confederate forces engage in intense trench warfare around Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia. The fighting, including the infamous "Bloody Angle," was fierce and grueling, leading to substantial casualties. Although neither side secured a decisive victory, these battles contributed to the relentless nature of Grant's campaign and the overall trajectory of the war in the Eastern Theater.
