These old antique prints originate from: "Histoire Naturelle Générale et Particuliere.", by de Buffon & Dauberton. Tome VII - Plate XXIII-XXIV: 'Le Putois.' Made by 'Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon' after an anonymous artist. Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. The engravers in this work are B. de Bakker, C. Brouwer, O. de Vries, C.F. Fritzsch (1719-c.1772), Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816), H. Vinkeles, Mittelj, G.S., R. Oakes, Fringham and Hulk after Jacques de Seve (active 1744-1788), Buvee and others. Very good, given age.
