Whitehaven Marriage License. Original printed marriage license with blanks fields completed by hand. Printed on laid paper with large watermark of a seated Britannia within a crown topped oval. Large applied paper and wax oval seal to top left corner which reads: 1789.THE.SEAL.OF.GEO.MARKHAM.A.M.COMMISSARY.OF.THE.ARCHDEACONRY.OF.RICHMOND.' Small embossed 'V SHILLINGS' duty stamp to top right and smaller 'Half Penny.' ink stamp below. The couple were married by the then vicar, the Reverend Wilfred Huddleston, who has signed the license in three places. Wilfred Huddleston was vicar of St. Nicholas, Whitehaven, from the 6th December, 1771 to the 4th October, 1811. Wilfred Huddleston, who also served as Justice of the Peace, was also one of the coffin bearers at the funeral of the renowned doctor & scientist, William Brownrigg (1712 ~1800). There is a large certificate at the bottom of the license which is hard to make out. George Markham? License begins: 'We the Reverend and Worshipful Markham Clerk, Master of Arts Commissary in and throughout the whole Archdeaconry of Richmond, in the Diocese of Chester, lawfully constituted. To our Beloved in Christ Joseph Mitchel and Mary Dale both of Whitehaven'| . Written to rear: 'Joseph Mitchel(?) of the Parish and Mary Dale of the same parish were married in this chapel by license this 28th of May 1796 by me Willfred Huddleston. A copy of the register of the Chapel of St. Nicholas # the old chapel in Whitehaven in the Parish of St. Bees. W Huddleston. 20.5 x 33 cm unfolded.
