A Japanese black lacquer album with a painted view of Mount Fuji with mother-of-pearl inlays, papered spine. Spine-ends chipped and with a few short tears. The album in very good and the photographs in excellent condition. Containing altogether 120 b/w photographs in various formats (6.7 x 11 cm - 11.5 x 16 cm) all with typed captions (30 with captions in the white margin of the photographic paper, the others with captions typed onto thin strips of paper pasted below). With 8 bought colour photographic views of Tokyo. * The photographs were taken by an Australian sergeant stationed at Kobe in 1947 and 1948. The first photograph in the album is of a group of three Australian soldiers posing in front of Parliament House (National Diet building) in Tokyo. There are overall ca. 50 photographs showing scenery and Japanese people, including boys in a boat, street scenes, peasants at work, a Japanese woman and child in traditional kimono with sun umbrellas, the interior of a temple, a taxi, a man on a bike with his two sons on the the back seat, Japansese buildings under repair, an aerial view of devastated Kobe, cherry blossom, temples, the swimming pool at Kobe etc. A few photographs show leisure activities such as Australian men and women taking refreshments at a cricket match at Kobe (but also 2 of the actual match!). beach scenes, and the Kyoto races. The majority of photographs are of Australian (and New Zealand) army personnel out and about in Kobe or inside the BCOF headquarters. Interestingly there are also 26 photographs of Japanese staff working at the BCFO headquarters as typists and wait staff. 15 of these show them together with Australian soldiers including a group of 10 photographs of a picnic with three Japanese women (named in the caption 'Myra, Jane and Shorty'). Another group photograph shows an Australian soldier identified as Tom Lawry with a group of 16 Japanese people identified as 'staff of Sergeants mess Kobe'. Lawry has his arms around the Jpanese woman sitting in front of him. There are also photographs of the BCFO headquarters, including the entrance to the camp, a 'Room No. 15', the sergeants dining room, the chapel and cemetery, Christmas parties, and a 'BCSA' Anniversary party. A group photographs shows the 19 members of the Sergeants mess Kobe 1948. Two loosely tipped-in photographs show a guard change. Throughout the album three of the Australian soldiers are identified by name, however the compiler of the album signs portraits of himself only as 'Yours truly'. 5 photographs have been removed from the album. Provenance: Tasmania. Loosely tipped-in is also the photograph of a military (?) brass band with photographer's rubber stamp verso (Winter's - Burnie [Tas.] and with the pencil note 'Hurst'. * A fascinating record of Australians serving in post-WWII Japan. While the BCOF in Japan appear to be well-documented, private photographs such as these, and particularly from Kobe, are very scarce and rarely offered for sale. N° de ref. de la librería
