1240 pages; Publisher's brown leatherette-surfaced cloth, spines lettered in gilt. Two volumes, text entirely in Russian. FIrst edition of the original text of the Memoirs of Mikhail Gorbachev. 566, [1] & [2 colophon/tirage]; 652, [1] & [2 colophon/tirage] pp. One section of Illustrations from b/w photographs in each volume. Following the deaths of Soviet Leaders Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and Konstantin Chernenko, Gorbachev was elected General Secretary by the Politburo in 1985. Gorbachev's efforts towards reform within the Soviet system, in addition to his participation in summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan contributed to the end of the Cold War, ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
