[xiv], 15-135 pp. + 167 ff. comprising a complete facsimile. 13 x 9.75", quarter red morocco, gilt title, maroon cloth sides, t.e.g. The York Gospels, held by York Minster, is an Anglo-Saxon book containing the Four Gospels (and not the whole Bible), plus other documents, such as the oaths taken by the Dean and Canons when installed, documents about land ownership, and a letter from King Canute dated around 1019 about his efforts to hold back the Danes. The preliminary material in this volume include several scholarly essays on this manuscript. John Sparrow's copy, with his name printed in red in the roll of members. With the booklabel of Helmut Friedlaender. A very good/near fine copy, with just a touch of wear to the lower tips and some short, faint scratch marks and slight warp to the covers.
