Important archaeological explorations of two tombs in South Manchuria in 1931, with appendices on Han Dynasty paintings and frescoes discovered there. Although published by the Kwanto Government Museum, this volume forms Vol. IV of Archaeologia Orientalis. These excavations were noteworthy for the discovery of Han frescoes, whose subjects include: venerable white bearded old man, a winged lion, bodiless monster, herons or cranes, and dragons. Text in Japanese by Osami Mori and Hiroshi Naito, with English resume by Kosaku Hamada, professor at Kyoto Imperial University and adviser to the Kwanto Museum. Numerous photographic plates and plans, some with color. The Appendices include: On the painting of the Han dynasties, by Kosaku Hamada. On the subjects of the fresco-paintings of a Han-tomb near Ying-cheng-tzu, by Seiichi Midzuno. Title pages and text in English and Japanese. The appendices are in Japanese only.Folio, 84 unnumbered pages illustrations, plates (1 double), map, plans (1 double). Errata slip loosely inserted.
