Descripción Jonathan Cape, London, 1971. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition. Translated from the Spanish by J. S. Bernstein. ***Very good in dark grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Top edge of text-block stained dark red (as called for). Extremities of spine slightly rubbed. Corners of front board slightly bumped. Boards very slightly rubbed. No inscriptions. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of £1.50 net. 3cm closed tear to bottom edge of front panel of dustwrapper. 1.5cm closed tear to top edge of dustwrapper adjoining spine. 1-2mm to edges of the head and tail of spine and the corners of dustwrapper worn and rubbed. Tiny loss to corners of dustwrapper. Extremities of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. No fading to the bright colours of the dustwrapper. Spine and front and rear panels of dustwrapper bright and clean. 204mm x 140mm. 170 pages. ***'One Hundred Years of Solitude - hailed as 'a classic on the grandest scale' by one of Latin America's greatest writers to the British public. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a spellbinding storyteller, a masterly weaver of words, themes and the moods of light and shade. ***As in that bestselling masterpiece, the subject of the title story is this superb collection is life in the decaying Columbian town of Macondo - the cycle of hope and despair, tragedy and comedy, that visit the inhabitants with the regularity of the rains and the heat that dominate their lives. The Colonel, a Quixotic figure burdened with extreme poverty and an asthmatic wife, languishes on faded dreams of his revolutionary past. He cherishes as his one tangible asset a skinny, long-legged fighting cock which for him, and indeed for the whole town, has become the symbol for defiance in the face of despair. ***Other stories tell of town and village life in South America, of the desperately poor and the outrageously rich, of memories and illusions, lost opportunities and present joy. No One Writes to the Colonel is a fitting companion volume to One Hundred Years of Solitude, for here is all the compassion, the wit, the magical invention that established that novel as one of the finest of its time.' (Quote from inside of front of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the first UK edition, complete in its dustwrapper in very bright condition. Of interest to collectors of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Latin American literature. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Nº de ref. de la librería 3944

Descripción Jonathan Cape Ltd, 1971. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This is a near fine first edition, first impression hardback in a near fine dust wrapper. There are no marks or inscriptions of any kind. The text block is tight and square with the top edge red. The green boards are in exceptional condition for their age; immaculate save for a very slight ‘push’ to the head and foot of the spine. The gilt lettering to the spine is vibrant and unmarked; many would describe the book as ‘fine’. The dust wrapper is unclipped, crisp and vibrant. It is robbed of a grading of ‘fine’ by some tiny edge wear and minute patches of colour loss. The original price of £1.50 remains. The dust wrapper is now protected by a removable, acid free acetate sleeve. The book presents beautifully and is almost certainly only lightly read. The late Mr Marquez, a Columbian by birth, is considered to be one of the most important and significant authors of the last century. Amongst the many prizes and honours bestowed upon him was ‘The Noble Prize for Literature’ in 1982. His novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ took the literary world by storm. This collection of short stories is Mr Marquez’s follow-up work and is considered by many to be a companion volume to ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’. A hugely important book, rare now in this lovely condition, it will be a worthy addition to any library or collection of important 20th century literature. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual book you will receive. It will be dispatched via The Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. Extra scans are available on request.
