Book by Hughes, James (editor). From Library Journal:
First published in France, this work is global in scope, including archaeology in lesser studied areas such as Vietnam, Korea, and Japan, as well as well-documented ancient cultures. In a geological and chronological arrangement, each section is introduced by a history of the archaeology of the region, followed by topical articles on a wide range of subjects, from art, trade, and agriculture to such sharply focused subjects as ``Archaeology and Apartheid.'' This atlas aims at presenting material from the perspective of ``new archaeology,'' reconstructing diverse peoples' lives based on their material culture. The articles, written largely by French contributors are, unfortunately, unsigned, and subject access is through a glossary only. Lavishly illustrated, the atlas draws attention both to recent archaeological techniques and to international concern for preserving the past, while encompassing a rich diversity of source material. It will be of interest to both laypersons and scholars. Joan W. Gartland, Detroit P.L.
