Descripción Macmillan, Toronto, 1927. Hardcover. First edition, only printing. This is the first Canadian edition of the third and fourth volumes of Churchill's acclaimed history of World War I. Churchill's history - which he titled "The World Crisis" - was published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915. After the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. Rather remarkably, he spent part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. The events of these two volumes include Churchill's time at the Front and his return to the Cabinet. The Canadian issue of Churchill's World Crisis was published in Canada from the American plates and is very similar in appearance. However, Canadian editions are quite considerably more scarce than either their British or U.S. first edition counterparts. Here is a very good set of the third and fourth volumes, 1916-1918, Parts I & II. The maroon cloth bindings remain clean and tight. We note minor but uniform toning to the spines, which nonetheless retain distinct gilt and quite respectable overall appearance, with light wear to the spine ends and a little unobtrusive dimpling to the spine cloth. The covers remain bright with only trivial wear confined to the corners. The contents remain clean, age-toned but with no spotting. Even the untrimmed fore edges remain clean. The sole previous ownership mark is the bookplate of David N. Weisstub (born 1944) affixed to each front pastedown. Weisstub is a noted professor of legal psychiatry and biomedical ethics at Universite de Montreal, the honorary life president of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health, and the editor-in-chief of its International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. He has been made a Chevalier of the Legion d’honneur in France, a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion, and Grand Ufficiale in Italy, and his bookplate bears images of the medals for these three honors. Here is a very good plus set of the third and fourth volumes, 1916-1918, Parts I & II. The maroon cloth bindings remain notably square and tight with no discernible sunning to the spines and bright spine gilt – a rarity. The only thing that prevents our grading these volumes as near fine is minor scuffing and a few associated whitish marks to the rear covers. The contents are crisp and bright with no spotting. Even the untrimmed fore edges are clean, with just mild age toning to the fore edges and light dust soiling to the top edges. The sole previous ownership mark is the tiny inkstamp of a Toronto bookseller on the lower left corner of the Vol.II front free endpaper. Laid in at the same endpaper is a 1927 newspaper clipping review of a book titled "The Truth About Jutland" by Admiral J. E. T. Harper. Descripción Thornton Butterworth Limited, London, 1927. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. 1st Edition. "The World Crisis" is Winston Churchill's epic and acclaimed history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. The set was originally published as six individual books between 1923 and 1931. The 1916-1918 Part I & Part II books of 1927 comprise the middle of the set. Any World Crisis first editions in dust jackets are quite rare, but offered here may be the rarest to be had - jacketed "traveller's" copies of the British first edition of the two 1916-1918 books, Parts I & II, which were issued even before the normal first edition, first printing. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen, "There exists an early, and extremely rare, issue of the volume without the Index, described by the publisher on a tipped-on typed label on the title pages and dust jackets of both Parts as a 'ROUGH PRINTED COPY / For traveller's use only and not for sale'." Here is the only such set we have ever seen offered with the original dust jackets. Contents and pagination are identical to the first edition, first printings (including all maps, charts, etc.) with two exceptions: omission of the seven-page index at the end of Part II and lack of the errata at the Part II half-title. These two omissions confirm that issuance of these "traveller's" copies preceded the normal British first trade printings. The print itself is slightly lighter, but otherwise identical and the volumes themselves bulk slightly thicker. The blue cloth bindings differ only in being a slightly brighter shade of dark blue than the dark navy of the normal British first trade printings. The dust jackets are identical in content and size to those of the normal first printing. However, of special note, the jackets are printed on the same thick, light greenish paper as the first printing of the 1911-1914 volume, rather than the notoriously acidic and brittle yellowish grey paper of the normal British first trade printings, making these jackets unique variants. The dust jackets each bear a 3.25 inch wide by .75 inch tall typed label affixed to the front face of the dust jackets, as specified by Ronald Cohen, reading: "ROUGH PRINTED COPY / For traveller's use only and / not for sale". Identical labels are affixed to each title page. The Part II labels both have an additional notation in pencil "*without the Index". It is difficult to overstate the scarcity of these very special, jacketed volumes. Condition is very good plus in very good minus dust jackets. The blue cloth bindings are tight, clean, and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt, and only minimal wear to extremities. The contents of both volumes show transfer browning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps. There are no inscriptions or previous ownership marks. Internal spotting is light and intermittent, primarily confined to the prelims. The page edges of both volumes are spotted with some minor soiling to the top and fore edges. The dust jackets are substantially complete, with some chipping at the spine ends, corners, and folds. The rear hinge of the Part I dust jacket is split; an ancient strip of deteriorated cellotape has been carefully removed, leaving a bit of residue. The Part II front face has a faint, roughly 3 inch circular moisture stain at the top center (that does not affect the binding beneath). Both jackets are now protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers backed with acid-free paper. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.2(III-1&2), Woods/ICS A31(ab)3a&3b.
