THE WORKS OF WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY In Twenty Six Volumes. William Makepeace Thackeray. Smith, Elder & Co, London. 1894 First Thus. William Makepeace Thackeray (18 July1811 - 24 December 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly 'Vanity Fair', a panoramic portrait of English society. This complete set of twenty six volumes is bound in green full morocco with five raised bands and six compartments with gilt titling to the spine. There are gilt dentelles to the front and rear paste downs and green marbled endpapers. Gilt page edges all round and gold silk markers. There is a neat copperplate inscription to the front free endpaper of volume one "To Charlotte M Brown-Sequard on the occasion of her marriage Dec 16th 1897 from her cousin Frank". Charlotte was the Daughter of Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard FRS (8 April 1817 - 2 April 1894), also known as Charles Edward, was a Mauritian physiologist and neurologist who, in 1850, became the first to describe what is now called ‘Brown-Séquard syndrome’. In 1858 Dr. Brown-Séquard arrived in London. During his stay there, he was appointed physician at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic (now the National Hospital), and was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physician's of London, as well as Fellow of the Royal Society. During this time he also published his 'Course of Lectures on the Physiology and Pathology of the Central Nervous System' an early exposition of what is now know as 'his' syndrome. This rare set is in stunning condition. Please note that overseas shipping rates will be formidable and will need to be quoted for the best rates. Ref P2 Size: 26 Volumes.
