A deluxe six-volume leatherbound set presenting the complete works of England's Joseph Addison (1672-1719). Addison wrote plays (most notably, "Cato, A Tragedy"), as well as poems and hymns. He is best remembered in the modern world for his essays, which he and his friend Richard Steele published in their periodicals "The Tatler" and "The Spectator" in the early 18th century. These writings edited by George Washington Greene, who has provided critical and explanatory notes. Includes Thomas Babington Macaulay's essay on Joseph Addison, titled "The Life and Writings of Addison." --- In full brown leather with debossed decorations to covers, five raised bands on spines, gilt-stamped titling on black spine blocks and gilt-stamped decorations to cover edges. All textblock edges marbled, as are all endpapers. --- A generally well-preserved set, though the front cover of volume six is nearly completely detached. The leather exhibits chafing and small bruises here and there. Interiors are tightly-bound and unmarked.
