About the Author: Dennis T. Jaffe, Ph.D.
Dr. Jaffe is a world-recognized leader in family business, family wealth, management and organizational change. As Professor at Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco, he created their doctoral program in Organizational Systems. He is also Senior Research Associate at the Wharton School’s Enterprising Families Initiative. He received his BA in Philosophy, MA in Management, and Ph.D. in sociology, all from Yale University, and he is a licensed clinical psychologist. He also serves as a Board Member and fellow of both the Family Firm Institute and World Business Academy.
For 30 years, Dr. Jaffe has helped family businesses all over the world deal with transition, create effective management teams, design family retreats, and build healthy relationships. He strives to work with a family to find their own individual solution to their unique challenges.
He helps families manage the personal and organizational issues that lead to successful and fulfilling transfer of businesses, wealth, values, commitments and legacies between generations. He believes that these are largely human, not financial or legal, challenges. They are best addressed by creating clear agreements, effective structures and clear communication within a family, and with its employees and other stakeholders.
As author of two of the foundational works about family business, Working With the Ones You Love: Building a Successful Family Business; and Working With Family Businesses: A Guide for Professional Advisors, as well as co-designer of the Aspen Family Wealth Assessment, his work has helped to define the field of family business consultation.
As a teacher and consultant to financial and legal advisors, Dennis works with financial institutions and advisors to craft personal and legal agreements that respect the values, intentions and personal concerns of families as they utilize sophisticated methods of wealth transfer and asset management.
His many articles on family business have appeared in Families in Business, Family Business Magazine, Family Business Review, the Journal of Accountancy, Estate Planning, Small Business Reports, Nations Business, and many others.
He is co-author of several books on organizational change and transformation, including Getting Your Organization to Change; Organizational Vision, Values and Mission; Rekindling Commitment; Take This Work and Love It; Empowerment: Building a Committed Workforce; and Self-Renewal: Achieving High Performance in a High Stress World.
