The author's account of life in western Canada in the latter part of the nineteenth century, including information on her travels along the recently completed Canadian Pacific Railway, her interactions with the native populations of the Prairie provinces and the Northwest Territories, missionary work, agricultural information, and the developing of a Canadian identity in the early years since Confederation. Largely uncut in the middle portion of the volume. "Mrs Johnstone paints the life of hardship of Canadian wives and children, countering the official reports of prosperity. [.] This disillusioning report emphasizes disease (prairie scurvy), cold, ringworm, insects, and heart-rending, fearful death." - Waterston.
