Excellent history by noted club historian Doug Smith. Jack Nicklaus was once asked to rate Winged Foot and he responded: "On a scale of one to ten, Winged Foot is an eleven, maybe a twelve." THIS COPY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR OPPOSITE THE TITLE PAGE: "NEW YORK CITY, NY OCTOBER 4, 1985 TO LILLIAN MCCARTHY ANDERSON---WITH WARM REGARDS AND WARM MEMORIES, FROM A STUDENT WHO REMEMBERS HER FONDLY FOR THE EXCELLENCE OF HER TEACHING. DOUG SMITH" Below is affixed Smith's business card. Laid in is a four-page color memorial from his burial in 2007. Also laid in is a copy of an original essay by Smith entitled "The Elm" with the notations: "Lillian This is something I wrote for our members, after the tree on p. 25 rec'd its award---DLS 5/1/85" The elm referred to towers over the greem on hole numer ten of the East Course and is designated as the Largest American Elm in New York State.
