Descripción

Subtitled "sailors and sailing ships in the Pacific," this is Harry Morton's important study of indigenous Pacific craft and European ships, whose movements depended on the wind. His first section examines the historic craft of the Pacific rim inhabitants ranging from rafts to Asian junks. In the second part he studies the design and operation of European ships from the galley and rowed craft to the clippers and windammers. In other sections maitenance and movement (technology), health and diet, actions and interactions are the subject headings. The latter includes command, mutinies and discipline, bucaneers, music and the clash of cultures. This impressive work covers every aspect of native and European voyaging and exploration in the Pacific under wind power.
