In his preface the author says this Wellford history came to be written "quite by chance." He explains that with four associates who regularly exchanged reminiscences it was decided that notes of these should be recorded. There was aslo increasing general interest in the area's "local history," Attrition took its toll of group and the author undertook preperation of a district "history." He traces the town's story back to the early 1900s when the first store was opened, with no nearby buildings, to form the beginning of the settlement around it. Farming was already established in the district so the book is also the story of the Rodney County (formed 1876), with Wellsford a county town within that administration. The arrival of early settlers to the district in the early 1860s,is recalled, including several groups of differing national origin. as also the story of the pre-European Maori people of the area. As the population built-up so did public, community amd civic amenities, roads were improved and the arrival of the North Auckland Main Trunk Railway in 1909 wasan important event for transport and communications. As was the case with much of NZ 's early settlement, farming soon became the main occupation and economic driver for town and country dwellers. For the format of his history the author adopted a somewhat informal arrangement for content, not following the usual chronological arrangement found in most similar pub;ications, Nevertherless, no aspect of progress and development of the distruict appears to have been overlooked -- brief biographies of early settlers and their contribution to the foundations of Rodney/Wellsford area and central feature of the history.
