For this publication William Main gathered an amazing collection of photographs depicting Wellington and its people, dwellings, business premises and important buildings or locations. The first images date from the 1850s --- only 10 years after the first immigrant shipse arrived there. The author backgrounds the techniques, equipment, business methods, the science of photography and the development of the photographic trade from those early days. Illustrations cover the equipment used and adertisements for services and photographic gear and one photographer engaged on "field work." The main section carries vintage illustrations beginning with a series of portraits, followed by dozens of images showing developments in NZ's capital city up to the early 1900s. A fine visual record of Wellington's early history. First edition of 1972, 108 pages including index, b/w photos throughout including one fold out presenting two three-page panoroma views, other pictures extending across two pages, otherwise normally two images per page, portraits of a number of early photographers at back. Laminated heavy card pictorial covers are VG with small chips spine extremities, light foxing to FFEP, otherwise internally VG+, no inscriptions. N° de ref. de la librería 004121
