106 pp. plus 166 leaves of plates, frontispiece portrait, Illustrated, folio (14.75 x 11 in.), quarter vellum, gilt title, grey paper sides, vellum tips, t.e.g. A festschrift produced in honor of type designer, book designer, painter and poet Emil Rudolf Weiss (1875-1942) on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday. With 24 contributions (texts in German, other than the essay by Stanley Morison) containing numerous illustrations. These are followed by 166 facsimile plates and specimens (many in color), including 6 foldouts, of examples of Weiss s work, including book decorations, initials and ornaments, title pages, and bindings. Also bound in are original lithographs by Carl Hofer and Karl Walser and an original woodcut by Emil Orlik. Number 391 of 450 copies of the regular edition (of a total of 500), this copy with a superb provenance, being that of the great bibliophile Major J. R. [John Roland] Abbey, with his bookplate and characteristic acquisition data in his hand. A near fine, well-preserved copy, the contents clean and fresh, with only scattered bits of spotting on the top edge of several pages (heavier on a few leaves); small areas of the top and bottom of the boards lightly rubbed; light bump to head of backstrip.
