Detalles bibliográficos

Editorial: Paris 1954

Año de publicación: 1954

FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. 17-398 plus bibliography and index. Frontispiece of two masked dancers and two girls, Caraja-Indians, repeated on dust-jacket. Sixty-three b/w photographic illustrations and 53 line drawings. General map of the area on page 110. Original green cloth attractively stamped with Brazilian Indian motifs on spine and front cover, sound. Interior clean. Dust jacket frayed on the edges. In Brazilian Adventure of 1933, a book about an expedition to the Matto Grosso to find or explain the disappearance of Colonel Fawcett in the late 1920's, Peter Fleming writs that the area is likely to remain virgin territory for many years to come. And yet here in A World on the Wane, Claude Levi-Strauss, is able to conduct various scientific expeditions to the area between 1935 and 1939 when he was Professor of Sociology at the University of Sao Paolo. It is a lovely book, certainly more than an anthropological study of a fast-changing native culture. Written in 1954, rather reluctantly it seems, he manages to capture not only a native Brazilian world on the wane, but also the fast changing European scene of pre and post World War II. It is not a surprise his first academic post was teaching philosophy for two years. For anyone wanting to know what Fawcett and Fleming faced, this is the book for them. Translated from the French by John Russell. First London Edition: Hutchinson & Co., 1961. N° de ref. de la librería 10266

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
