Acerca de

Sinopsis:

Born during the Civil War, Ella Condie Lamb was a gifted artist who became an important designer for the J. & R. Lamb Studios, an ecclesiastical art and stained glass firm which had been established in New York City in 1857 and is still in existence today. She became known not only for her professional achievements - she was one of the first two women accepted into The National Society of Mural Painters - but also for skillful and eloquent portraits and landscapes. Trained at the National Academy of Design, The Art Student's League, and in Paris, Ella was a mature professional artist at the time she married her husband Charles Rollinson Lamb in 1888 and became a member of the intellectual and highly-driven artistic Lamb family. She used a keen intelligence to find a way to blend successfully the needs of her husband and children with her calling to be an artist and would not concede that the rival claims of family and art could not be reconciled. Her biographer has - here - used extensive 19th Century memoirs, diaries, family letters, taped interviews, and Design Catalogues of the J. & R. Lamb Studios to bring Ella to life again. Information in several large scrapbooks of newspaper clippings which contain public records of Charles' career, his creation of the Dewey Arch and his presidency of the Municipal Arts Society of New York during the City Beautiful movement, enrich the narration of Ella's relationship with her dynamic husband.
