The Book Guild, Sussex, 1995. Hardbound w/dj, Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 215 pages, illustrated. ----------------------In 1939 Gus Green volunteered for service in the Fleet Air Arm, then a relatively new and hybrid branch of the Royal Navy much misunderstood by the Lords of the Admiralty and much favoured by volunteers because, like submarine service, it paid more than regular Navy posts. Despite his best efforts he was deemed a 'dipped pilot' and trained instead as a Navigator. When he wasn't losing navigation pencils which he kept in his beard to stop them blowing away, stampeding elephants by accident or trying to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Gus Green was literally fighting for his life in sea-battles in which he saw hundreds of others perish, many of them his friends, and his own survival only served to contribute to his long held belief that he was always destined to be alone and an outsider. His return to the UK after four years of travel and battle was a painful and alienating experience – he had been married for two years, and seen his wife for only two weeks. Water Wings is his hugely entertaining account of a war fought both from the air and from the decks of aircraft carriers, which took him from England to Trinidad, Africa, the Far East and to the deadly waters of the Mediterranean where his ship was part of the 1942 August convoy to Malta.
