Small octavo. Pp. xxxvi, 314, (4). Half-title present. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Shoulder notes. Hardcover, bound in contemporary full calf, spine with raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, morocco lettering-piece gilt, all edges red, marbled endpapers, green ribbon marker, slight rubbing to corner-tips, minute chip at foot of spine, name clipped off last free endpaper, repeated small contemporary stamp. In about fine condition. Overall an excellent copy. ~ First edition. Rare. The biography of the Jesuit priest Jean de Britto who worked in India as a missionary for 25 years before he was martyred on 4 February, 1693. The biography elaborately recounts his evangelical work among the Indians, but also records his observations on their life-style, way of dress, religion and social and political structure.
