As the Allies arrived at the frontiers of Germany itself in the last autumn of WWII, the Germans responded with a variety of initiatives designed to regain the strategic initiative. While the Wonder Weapons such as the V-2 missile are widely recognized, the Volks-Grenadier Divisions (VGDs) are practically unknown. Often confused with the Volkssturm, the Home Guard militia, VGDs have suffered the undeserved reputation as second-rate formations, filled with young boys and old men suited to serve only as cannon fodder. This ground-breaking book shows that VGDs were actually conceived as a new, elite corps loyal to the National Socialist Party and equipped with the finest weapons available. Come follow along with the soldiers of the 272nd VGD's Füsilier Company from their first battles in the Huertgen Forest to their final defeat in the Harz Mountains . . . learn the enormous potential of VGDs . . . and feel their soldiers' heartbreak at their failure.

About the Author:

Douglas E. Nash, son of an Air Force senior master sergeant, grew up on a variety of different military bases across the United States. Interested in military history as long as he could remember, his enthusiasm for the service led him to volunteer for the US Army in June 1974, days after his high school graduation. After serving a tour of duty with the 1st Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Bindlach, Germany, he applied for and was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in 1975. Graduating from the U.S. Military Academy with the Class of 1980, Doug then served as an Armor officer in various armor and cavalry units in the United States and Germany. As his interest in military history deepened, he was awarded a Master of Military Arts and Sciences from the Army's Command and General Staff College in 1995. After penning several articles about civil affairs in the Gulf War of 1990-91, where he served as a Civil Affairs officer, he then wrote articles for publication on The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer, Eastern Front subjects, and several book reviews for Military History, the official publication of the U.S. Army's Center for Military History. His first book, Hell's Gate: The Battle of the Cherkassy Pocket, January to February 1944, was published by RZM Publishing in 2002. Since his retirement from the Army in July 2006, he has continued to work in the military history field and lives with his family in northern Virginia.
