Descripción

Rare and early glimpse of North American Icelanders celebrating their culture in the "old" country of Iceland. A relatively early document, published abroad, marking the cultural bonds between Iceland and Canada. At time of catraloguing, not listed on Amicus; not on Gegner; not in Peel. Short, neat split to wraps at spine and light soil to upper left corner of front panel of wraps and general light soil to rear panel, internally sound and still Good condition in wraps. A 14 page program booklet for a gathering of Icelandic Canadian (and American) Icelanders who were in Iceland to attend the millenial cellebration of the founding of Iceland's parliament in 1930. Most of the booklet is devoted to tributes to Iceland, Canada, etc. in the form of poems by leading figures. Poems and songs include Salmur Fyrir Predikun, Salmur Efter Predikun, Velkomnir Heim! eftir (by) Sig. B. Grondal; Thott Thu Langforull Legdir (I have angilicized the title) by Stephan G. Stephansson, Islands Ljod by Hannes Hafstein, Vilhjalmur Stefanson Nordfari by Jakob Thorarinsen, Mini Ingolfs and Lofsongur by Matth. Jachumsson. Note that this item is listed separately from the long run of booklets on the Manitoba festival that goes by the same name, because the festival chronicled in this publication was uniquely held in Iceland, not Canada. (PUBLISHER: [see title], 1930. DESCRIPTION: 14 pages; 22 cm. Cover title. SUBJECTS: Poetry/Ljóð; Icelandic-Canadian Literature; Icelandic Literature/Íslenskar bókmenntir; Western Icelanders/Vestur Íslendingar; Festivals; Fairs; Celebrations; Þjóðhátíðir, Iceland. ne or more of the selections here relate to Wynyard, Saskatchewan.
