Hardcover, 8vo., 138 pgs., brown cloth, no dust jacket present. Brown cloth, red titles, no jacket. A library copy with slight glue marks at end, and a charming lending 'rules' card on the pastedown, which we left as a model statement of archaic rules, an "order" of model severity and authority, in a very traditional institution. The rules seem to have scared all readers off, as the book lending record showed no users, in at least 40 years ! Very good condition (no dust jacket). First edition, presumed, not stated. No imprinted mention of 'war' authorization. But the work is a fine short study of the war engaged on the ground, that the author experienced, and which is reflected in accompanying drawings here. The action is in the Guadalcanal area, and the scenes, drawn in pencil, are by a Major Donald Dickson, USMC. Publication in magazine format preceded this book, and gave civilians a sense of the struggle. Though this short reporting-piece was 'prentice work, Hersey would soon refine his skills in the more ambitious "Bell for Adano" novel, and in his book on Hiroshima, making him perhaps the best writer of the WW2 generation, notwithstanding another populist author, Ernie Pyle, a closer correspondent and observer of battles.
