356 pages; Contents clean and tight in original brown pebbled cloth binding with gilt lettering at spine. Some minor wear. Perhaps contrary to what the optimistic publisher anticipated when he titled this book "Volume 1", this was the only volume ever published. In the Preface he states his purpose: "In giving The Virginia "Peerage" to the public, . the aim has been to collate, as it were, into one picture-gallery, the portraits of these great men; thus enabling the people of Virginia, . to look upon a group of her most distinguished sons . through the mazes of extended biographies." The worthy sons of Virginia chosen include: George Washington, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and John Randolph of Roanoke. In addition to the biographies, the book contains an appendix with the text of the Declaration by the Representatives of the United Colonies of North America. on Taking up Arms, July 6, 1775 which predates the final Declaration of Independence by a year. Although this document appears in Dickinson's Writings, much of it was written by Thomas Jefferson. Robert Templeman Craighill was born in Charlestown in 1843. He studied law and established a law practice in Lynchburg for 18 years. During the Civil War Craighill served with the 12th Virginia Cavalry. He served with the Virginia Governor at the Yorktown Centennial. He was a Mason and also a trustee of the Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum. N° de ref. de la librería
