Fewer still are the regions that can claim a Fred Coyne Hamil as their own ~ a writer who brings to his subject both scholarship and deep personal affection based on ancestral ties and early associations. As Professor Hamil tells us with warmth and enthusiasm of the early settlers, roads, bridges, inns, and mills of his native region, his story takes on a wider significance. Here, indeed, is the story of pioneer Canada, "writ small." Such a detailed account of the everyday life of the people can give ~ and does give, as handled by Professor Hamil~ a truer picture of social history than a broad treatment which necessarily overlooks many local but significant variations. A local history which has this wider importance is, however, obviously not a mere recounting of facts ~ the labours of the researcher must be illuminated by true historical perspective and imagination. This is the kind of local history Professor Hamil has written; it sets a pattern for others to follow. The valley of the Lower Thames includes the greater part of what is now the county of Kent, and comprises one of the richest and most populous agricultural areas of modern Ontario. The territory~forest, swamp, and prairie~ was purchased by the Crown from the Indians just one hundred and sixty years ago. For many years it remained separated from the upper river settlements by miles of primeval forest. The Thames River was the highroad for commerce and travel that bound the people on both its banks into one community, and connected them with other communities far beyond. Not until the early 1850's did the building of the first railroad begin to lessen the importance of the Thames River as the main unifying influence of the region. Professor Hamil has embellished what is commonly known of such striking pioneer figures as Thomas Talbot, the Ainse family, and others, with additional fascinating details, and brings before us many figures less well known to history but whose careers arouse in varying degrees admiration, sympathy, curiosity, and amusement. The stories of local feuds might inspire the writers of romance~ indeed, there is material for a whole shelf of novels in these pages. N° de ref. de la librería 1281201
