Descripción Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1961, 1961. CHURCHILL, Winston S. The Unwritten Alliance : Speeches, 1953-1959 . Edited by Randolph S. Churchill. London: Cassell & Company, Ltd., (1961). First UK Printing. Pp. (4),v-xi,(1),1-332. 8vo, red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "The fifth volume of Sir Winston Churchill's post-war speeches covers a wide stretch of time and spans an historic period. As Prime Minister he was the country's spokesman at the time of the Queen's Coronation, on her return from the Commonwealth tour, and on the death of Queen Mary. His speech in Westminster Hall at the celebrations to mark his 80th birthday was made on an occasion unique in Parliamentary annals. In the House of Commons he delivered great speeches on the international problems that still confront us -- German rearmament, the hydrogen bomb, world disarmament; on domestic matters, speeches on National Service and the adoption of a new Army rifle revealed him, as always, a consummate master of the cut and thrust of Parliamentary debate." - from the dj. Top edge a bit dusty, else vg in lightly rubbed, crisp, unclipped dj. From the library of Nova Scotian publisher R.H. McCurdy. Scarce. 400.00. Nº de ref. de la librería 78400

Descripción Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1948. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. 1st Edition. Here is a full, jacketed British first edition set of all five of Churchill's post-WWII speech volumes. These volumes span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955), into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the onset of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb, development of the hydrogen bomb, and the beginning of the space age (to name a few). These postwar speech volumes are much more scarce than Churchill's War Speeches volumes; all five of these books had only a single printing each. Moreover, collectors should note that the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, is the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime and was issued only in Britain, with no U.S. edition. All five volumes offered here are very good in very good minus or better dust jackets. All five cloth bindings are clean, tight, and square with sharp corners and minimal wear, though the Stemming the Tide spine gilt is a bit dulled and there is slight sunning corresponding to the small dust jacket losses at the spine ends. The contents of all five volumes are uniformly clean and tight. No internal spotting. The sole previous ownership marks in the set are a small decorative bookplate on the ffep of In the Balance and a single inked name on the Stemming the Tide ffep. Notably, the only trace of spotting in the set is found on the top edge of In the Balance. There is some minor dust soiling to a few top edges, and the page edges generally show modest age-toning. All five dust jackets are bright and clean. The first four dust jackets are unclipped, still bearing the original front flap prices. The Unwritten Alliance is neatly price-clipped, but compensates with superb shelf appearance and virtually none of the wear and orange streaks endemic to this edition. Please note that Stemming the Tide has the more desirable first state dust jacket. The Stemming the Tide jacket is unclipped, still retaining the original front flap price, with wear at the edges and hinges, chipping at the spine ends to a maximum depth of .25 inch, and chipping to the upper edge of the rear panel to a maximum depth of .625 inch. In the Balance, Europe Unite, and The Sinews of Peace show minor chipping and wear to the spine ends. These flaws aside, this is a quite respectable and clean jacketed set. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The Unwritten Alliance is neatly price-clipped, but compensates with superb shelf appearance, no losses, and virtually none of the wear and orange streaks endemic to this edition. Please note that Stemming the Tide has the more desirable first state dust jacket. Stemming the Tide has a 1.25 inch closed tear to the upper front face that nearly disappears beneath the dust jacket protector, as well as chipping to a depth of .25 inch at the spine head. In the Balance also shows some minor chipping to the spine head. The dust jackets for Europe Unite and The Sinews of Peace show only light wrinkling at the spine heads, as well as a bit of wear along The Sinews of Peace front hinge. Descripción Cassell and Company Ltd., London, 1948. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Near fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. 1st Edition. Here is a superior, jacketed set of all five of Churchill's post-WWII speech volumes. These volumes span the period from Demobilization in late 1945, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through his second Premiership (1951-1955) into a time when Churchill passes "into a living national memorial" of the time he has lived and the Nation, Empire, and free world he has served. These postwar speech volumes are much more scarce than Churchill’s War Speeches volumes; all five of these books had only a single printing each. Moreover, collectors should note that the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, is the last of Churchill's books published in his lifetime and was issued only in Britain, with no U.S. edition. All five volumes offered here are near-fine volumes in jackets that range from very good plus to near-fine. All five cloth bindings are clean and square with virtually no wear. The contents of all five volumes are uniformly clean and tight. We find no spotting in the set. The only previous ownership marks in the set are confined to The Sinews of Peace front pastedown - a pencilled date of "8/48" and a tiny Oxford bookshop sticker. The page edges show only mild soiling and age-toning. All five dust jackets are bright, clean, and highly complete with only trivial chipping to a few spine ends. All five dust jackets are unclipped, still bearing the original front flap prices. Please note that Stemming the Tide has the more desirable first state dust jacket. Stemming the Tide has a two inch closed tear and some wrinkling at the bottom of the front face, but no loss associated with this tear, which is unobtrusive beneath the dust jacket protector. This flaw aside, the five dust jackets show only minor wear at extremities and a few trivial imperfections in the black background color. Dust jackets for The Unwritten Alliance were notoriously poorly printed, and consequently are almost always rubbed or streaked, with orange showing through the black background. This example of The Unwritten Alliance has excellent spine presentation, with two vertical streaks of orange color confined the front face. We note almost invisible closed tears near the upper front hinges of Europe Unite and The Sinews of Peace, but these two jackets are nonetheless unusually clean and complete examples. In the Balance is likewise an unusually bright example. Assembling full, jacketed sets in such condition has become difficult. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.
