Sinopsis: "Untethered in Paradise" is Liliane Welch’s passionate response to works of art that have captured her heart and imagination -- to the sites of their origin, the struggles of their creators, the subtle eccentricities of their history.
In both poetry and prose, Welch explores the unsettling power of paintings and statues to enthrall and alter their perceivers. She encounters Colville’s light on her Maritime home terrain, revisits with Rodin her native Luxembourg, lingers in Monet’s Giverny garden and on Cezanne’s Mont Saint-Victoire, walks with the Giacomettis through Switzerland, follows Caravaggio and Lotto through Italy, and joins Vermeer’s women in their intimate writing chambers. Like her poem/painting correspondence with Luxembourg artist Gust Graas, "Untethered in Paradise" is a joyful and intense engagement with the art works that colour a life.
About the Author: Liliane Welch has written fifteen collections of poetry, including "Life in Another Language", which won the Bressani Prize. She has co-authored two volumes of literary criticism on modern French poetry, and has published a book of essays, "Seismographs". Her writings have been widely anthologized and translated in French, German and Italian. Her many honours include the Alfred Bailey Prize. Liliane Welch teaches at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada.
