Sinopsis: The U.S.Mexico War resulted in the annexation of nearly half of Mexicos territory an area that includes the present-day states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah, as well as parts of Oklahoma and Wyoming. This new one-volume reference provides a balanced view of an aggressive chapter in U.S. westward expansion, with scholars from both the United States and Mexico contributing. The book is interdisciplinary, examining not only the battles, strategies and personalities on both sides of the conflict, but its effects on the culture as a whole. Supporting the text are many illustrations, including maps and unique period daguerreotypes never before published, and an appendix of primary documents. One volume
From Booklist: The editorial staff of this one-volume encyclopedia sought "to create a reference work on the subject--including events from 1821 to 1854--as a concise, first source for generations of future scholars investigating this era." Publication is timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo, which ended the Mexican War in 1848. It should bring attention to an overlooked era of both American and Mexican history. The project involved more than 200 contributors from all parts of the world, giving the volume a truly varied and international perspective.
The arrangement of the main body of more than 600 articles is alphabetical, with a table of contents. Among the articles are many biographies, but other topics are well represented. A sampling of the articles includes Alamo, art, Colt revolver, deserters, Indian policy, Texas Rangers, and war correspondents. Some entries, such as army, Mexican; causes of the war; and flags, are divided into separate articles. Flags, for example, consists of Mexican flags, Texan flags, U.S. flags, and militia flags. All essays are signed and include bibliographies. Use of cross-references within the essays seems to be sparse, but a well-developed index of more than 30 pages can lead the researcher through various relationships among the topics.
The volume excels in special features. Nearly 50 black-and-white line-drawn maps giving battles, sieges, and political boundaries help with visualization of events. Many of the illustrations are taken from daguerreotypes of the 1840s and engravings made for early publications on the war. They make for a truly handsome volume. Several appendixes provide information on the structure and makeup of the Mexican and U.S. armies and navies. They also include the texts of various historical documents.
The United States and Mexico at War fills a gap in the reference works for this particular historical era. It is recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries with interest in or demand for this subject or those wanting to supplement their circulating resources on U.S.^-Mexico foreign relations.
