Descripción

Grey cloth stamped in green. 8vo. xv, 468pp. Illustrated. Maps. First edition. An account of the author's trip to Europe and Russia in the autumn of 1898. William Thomas Stead was a pioneer journalist, editor, social reformer and peace activist. The purpose of this book was to gauge reaction among the capitals of Europe to two notable events of 1898- America's imperial instincts in the Spanish-American War and the Russian Tsar's "Peace Rescript" proposing the holding of an international conference to halt development of armaments and promote unity among nations. The work is illustrated with numerous portraits of political figures and maps of the author's route. After writing this book Stead became involved in his Peace Crusade and attended both Hague Conferences. He perished on the Titanic in 1911. A very good copy with some light soiling and wear to the cloth. The text is fine with some light wear. Some pages are still uncut. Scarce. N° de ref. de la librería 5150
