First Bookform Edition. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. 8 vo. Contemp. three-quarter lea. with marbled boards. iv, 115, (1) pp. Three folding lithographed plates after the author's drawings. From the Biological Laboratories, Harvard University with their acquisition date on the bookplate of 24 Aug. 1883 and their release embossed stamp in the lower corner of the title; a very good copy. "Strasburger (1844-1912) received his doctorate in botany in 1866 at the University of Jena, where he taught from 1869 to 1880, before accepting a professorship at the University of Bonn. His skill as a microscopist, including his use of the recently developed aniline dyes for staining specimens, enabled him to observe for the first time how plant cells divide after fertilization. Strasburger's discovery was reported with great precision. The plant used was the Fritillaria persica, Liliaceae, a spring-flowering perennial herb bulb. .Strasburger's many observations and illustrations confirmed the validity of what had been a vague intuited idea: that every living thing grows by cell division." (H. Robin, 'The scientific image', 1992, p.49 describing and reproducing plate I). N° de ref. de la librería 000371
