Elle fût Saisie au collège de Billom lors du procès des Jésuites en 1762 . L'original, mesurant 6.48 x 3.24 mètres, était une pièce à charge dans le procès contre les jésuites . "" *************************************************************************** "" The Church shown as a galleon with different religious factions attempting to gain command; etched from an allegorical painting of the French Wars of Religion, which had been discovered in the Jesuit College at Billom in Auvergne. The original painting after which this print was made is now in the Musée de l'Histoire de France housed in the Hotel de Soubise in Paris. It is on a vast scale, measuring some 10 by 20 feet. The painting was confiscated from the Jesuit College in Billom in 1762 in the course of the dissolution of the Order in France, and brought to the Parlement in Paris.It there served as the basis for a learned antiquarian investigation by le President Rolland, delivered on 15 July 1763. This is printed in full, together with a thorough study of the painting's history, in 'Le 'Typus Religionis', description d'un tableau conservé au Musée de l'Histoire de France' by J.Meurgey de Tupigny, Paris 1956 (a copy is in the Dept. library). The most likely date for the painting is 1613. The etching was made later to accompany the notice devoted to the College of Billom, published in the 'Recueil de plusieurs des ouvrages de Monsieur le President Rolland', Paris 1783. A copy was made, with the texts translated into French, for 'La galère Jesuitique' of 1826. The ship contains all the religious orders of the Catholic persuasion, who sail across the sea of the world, setting a course away from the world of flesh and towards the City of God. On the way, they harvest the faithful, who join them in the ship, while fending of the attacks of the deady sins and of heretics. "" ************************ ref 274 & 529sc & ref 243 réf IXb.
