4to - over 9" to 12" tall Signed by Author(s). Hermann Zapf (1918-2015) was one of the most influential typographers of the early digital age, having a career that "spanned the glory days of hot metal composition right through to the rise of the Apple Mac"; his creations continue to inspire today. Interestingly it's Zapf's Dingbats that may have had the biggest impact on modern communication, as these formed the basis for Unicode's symbols, which in turn paved the way for the now-ubiquitous emoji. This book presents 78 specimen pages of Zapf's typography, mostly of title-pages, but also included are some text pages and even a self-cover for a catalogue. A lovely display of the incredible talent of a gifted type designer. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in half green laid paper over a vellum shelfback with vellum tips, gilt lettering on the spine, title page in red, blue and black, Preface in English, German and French, specimens are both bound and tipped in, most are in black but several are in various ink colours, at the end is a listing of each specimen and its typographical details; large quarto in size (approximately 12" tall), text unpaginated. There were three published versions, the German, French and American editions, the American edition was limited to 500 copies of which this is no. 448, signed by Herman Zapf. The dust jacket is of plain light brown paper, it is not price-clipped although there is no price printed, the front panel mirrors the title page, the back panel lists four other books by Hermann Zapf. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. The unclipped (but unpriced) dust jacket has a very small spot on the front panel and one short, closed tear on the back panel, else fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
