Descripción:

Göteborg, 2. VIII. 1956, 4°. 1 page. Adressed to Cedric Morgan in Bournemouth, Great Britain: "[.] I am very glad to hear, that you are going to perform my viola sonata over the radio. I am sorry to say that I have nothing in particular to say about the work, unless it would interest you that it was written during a period under the war, when I composed in a more or less traditional style and using smaller means than I do now a days. This is the only work for viola I have written, but if by chance I am going to add something new for your instrument I would be glad to send it to you. If it may interest you I just completed a cantata for soprano and chamber ensemble over English Songs, which was performed at the international festival of the I.S.C.M. in Stockholm in June [.] I would be only to glad to hear from you about how my sonata will be received by the English listeners [.]" - Hallnäs worked as organ player at the Johannebergskyrkan in Göteborg. He is one of the leading Swedish composers of the twentieth century. - Small tears. N° de ref. de la librería

Typed Letter Signed: 5 August 1924. 1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. It would be a 'great pleasure' to him to be able to make use of the article she has sent him, 'but my papers are almost entirely in the hands of a staff of regular contributors', and he has 'very little opportunity of using outside contributions'. In a postscript he expresses pleasure at the fact that his 'papers come your way', and sends his regards to 'Patricia and David'. Manuscript Letter: 11 August 1924. Written by a secretary and signed by Mee. 1p., 12mo. Good, on lighly-aged and creased paper. He is not 'acquainted personally with any of the agencies for assisting people to write for publication', and so cannot recommend one. 'They may be useful, & money spent on their advice well spent, but I do not know. [last four words underlined] My experience is that people learn to write by their own practice of writing.'. Descripción 1924. commisserating with him on his failure in his "courageous attempt to win a seat for Labour . the seed will not die. You have also made a valuable contribution to that wonderful total of five million and a half voters who have placed the Party in such an unassailable position as the second in the country. We have come through an Election which has tested the Labour party to its very foundations . you have been subject to a kind of attack, in common with the Party generally, which can produce nothing but the most unfortunate reaction on the minds of people who have wished to do their duty to their country by Democratic and Parliamentary methods . From the Opposition benches we must rally the country to sanity of mind and enlightened policy .", 1 side folio, House of Commons headed paper, 4th November Blanco White married H. G. Descripción DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Sargent writes in reply to a letter from a Miss Aitken who suffers from polio and had written to Sargent asking for help in obtaining a job. Sargent writes, ‘I was deeply moved reading your letter. My well loved daughter had polio for seven years and finally died from over exerting herself in order to get completely well, so I am naturally very anxious to help you.’ He then goes on to suggest that she approach the Appoitments Director at the BBC and undertakes to help her as much as he can. He then signs off writing, ‘My very best wishes and I do hope that some congenial job will turn up for you, yours very sincerely, Malcolm Sargent.’ HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Sargent’s daughter Pamela tragically died from polio in 1944. The experience affected him deeply and his 1945 recording of The Dream of Gerontius was a powerful expression of his grief at her passing (‘Tunes of Glory: The Life of Malcolm Sargent’ by Richard Aldus - Hutchinson, London 2001). DETAILED CONDITION REPORT - 18cm x 22cm 2pp. Original mailing folds. In the top left hand corner well away from the text is a handwritten note presumably written by Miss Aitken which reads ‘Recd - 11th / 8 Wrote ‘Thank You’ 12/8/63’. Two hole punch holes on left hand edge well away from text. Very light handling at bottom left corner. Else fine. ALL ITEMS SOLD BY ‘A PIECE OF HISTORY’ CARRY A LIFETIME GUARANTEE OF AUTHENTICITY. SHOULD ANY ITEM EVER BE FOUND NOT TO BE COMPLETELY GENUINE, IT MAY BE RETURNED FOR A FULL REFUND. Nº de ref. de la librería 000035
