Letter One (12mo, 2 pp; good, with glue from previous mounting to reverse of blank second leaf of bifolium): Jesse hears 'that there has been a violent attack made on my lectures to the Brighton Fishermen in "the Field" of last Saturday'. He 'published these lectures in the hopes that they might be useful to many people'. He 'gave the Copyright to Mr. Booth the publisher & never recovered one farthing profit for them'. 'They were written for an ignorant club of men without any pretension'. Jesse wrote what he thought would 'amuse or insstruct them partly from my own head & partly from different books in my library. I made no secret of this.' He thinks it is 'hard that I shd. have been so attacked' and asks Walford to 'find out who has done it'. The Field would not publish a reply by Jesse. 'My only aim in my lectures was to do good & so far I have succeeded'. Letter Two (12mo, 1 p; good, with glue and paper from mount adhering to blank reverse. He has sent 'by to day's Book post' his 'papers on Dame Juliana Berners & her Book of St. Albans', and he hopes Walford will approve of them. He will be glad to see Walford 'whenever you want a mouth full of Sea air'. Signed 'very truly yrs | (but nearly blind) | [signed] Edward Jesse'. N° de ref. de la librería 6684
