Sinopsis: Turn South at the Next Magnolia is a collection of commentaries on Southern life and phenomena. Author, Nan Graham has been a bi-weekly commentator on Wilmington, NC's local public radio station since 1994.
From the Author: The first commentary was ‘in the can.’ All that was left for this initial venture into Radioland was ‘Lead in’ and ‘Lead Out’ for the announcer.
“And what do you want to use as your sign-off?” Aileen, the producer asked. “Usually the commentators give some credentials in the ‘Lead Out.’” She waited for me to answer.
I thought for a minute. “Well, I teach, of course.” Somehow that didn’t sound like a credential to recommend me as a radio commentator. “And my family...” my voice trailed off.
Aileen waited as if I were saving the best for last. Unfortunately, I wasn’t. My mind was a blank. I thought about the commentary I had just taped, a piece called Darning Needles and Croaker Sacks... on the changing South in a small Alabama town.
“And I’m a lifelong Southerner?” I suggested.
Aileen seemed pleased. “That’s it,” she said. And so it began. In January 1995, my bi-weekly four-minute commentaries started on public radio station WHQR. And I’m still at it today.
These years have given my writing a real electric cattle prod. They’ve also provided me with the opportunity to explore characters and places in my past and in my present. My hook? The perspective of a Southern woman of a certain age who has lived through WWII, segregation, a race riot, cancer, thirty-nine years of marriage, the computer avalanche, a grandchild, the homogenization of our Southern setting into mainstream America, and more change than I thought possible. It is my hope that the commentaries reflect a fresh view of the changes, with a bit of humor to see them through.
So sit down and have a slice of Southern. As tasty as a fresh ear of Silver Queen corn, as vinegary as N.C. barbeque, and as heart-stopping as a platter of fried chicken. Help yourself. —Nan Graham
