HB. Date unsure: has the tudor rose in title page pattern; thought to be circa 1596 to 1601. Thomas Este (or Easte or East or Est) was an Elizabethan printed who published mainly music (madrigals. etc.); he was born c.1550 and died London, 1608. He publ. Byrd's psalms, songs & sonnets (1588), and works of other madrigalists; he printed Dowland's Second Book of Songs or Airs (1600) and John Danyel's Songs for the Lute Viol and Voice (1606). Half-leather, marbled paper-covered boards. Has seven gilt bands to patterened backstripe with gilt title, Tulli Officia, in a black panel. Very battered, though still tight. Rebound long ago, with elements (backstripe) integrated. Much wear and rubbing to edges, corners and joints; most of the paper covering to boards worn away. Various inscr. on eps, incl. "J J Aston, Wylde Green" and "W Ockey 1870" and a note stating that "The first edition of this book Cicero's Officiis in Latin was printed in 1465. The first classical book printed. Three volumes in one. Title page (which has lace pattern border, has ex-owner's name "Richard Cheswell" (or Cheswall"?). 14 page Epistle to the Reader (unpaginated), then 145 pages(foliated) , so 22 pages missing from end. Text in two columns in black, the English in bold. Quire marks at bottom. Pages have some irregular tanning and stains (often just in the margin). There are the odd small tears throughout to page margins. There is a tear (a gouge mark as part wrinkled) shaped in an inverted "U" with one arm being 0.5 inch and the other 1 inch that osbcures, in its periphery, parts of about ten words each side. There are worm holes to top margin affecting one third of the pages; some of the margins have pencil or ink numbers written in them and in several cases words. Book very worn and battered.
