Descripción:

xviii, 325, [1] pp. 8vo., 205 x 160 mm, newly bound in three-quarter blue morocco over blue cloth. London: Morris and Reeves, Printers, 1808. A fine deluxe bound copy, comprising the third edition, printed by subscription, with a list of the subscribers following the title page. A crucial work of Muggletonianism, The Muggletonians were a radical religious sect formed of a Millenial fervor that gripped England during the Interregnum. This sect took to heart a passage in Chapter XI of the Revelation of St. John which predicted that God would appoint two witnesses to prepare the world in the final days before the apocalypse. According to the Muggletonians, Lodowick Muggleton (1608-1698) and John Reeve (1608-1658) were these two witnesses. The message of the Muggletonians, Lodowick Muggleton especially, was esentially epicurean. Since God had created a clockwork universe with which he did not interfere, formalized religious ceremonies were therefore unnecessary. Such views earned Muggleton numerous fines and arrests. The last of the Muggletonians is reported to have died in the mid-twentieth century. N° de ref. de la librería
