Sinopsis: Twenty-two plays with a cast of one.
From Booklist: This ambitious volume contains 22 "apostroplays," a term coined by Burchard to describe that dramatic unit characterized by brevity and a cast of one. Averaging 10 minutes in length, these one-person plays feature a central character interacting with another implicit, though imperceptible, character. Music composed by Dana Libonati is included at the close and may serve as an overture and a between-act bridge to the full-length production. Burchard addresses a number of themes ranging from personal identity and death to the celebration of the human spirit; however, few of her apostroplays escape the sentimental. Many lend themselves to the flagrant pedantry of morality plays. The characters, which span several age groups and socioeconomic situations, are frequently christened according to a personal vice or virtue. This rather archaic prescription appears redundant in light of rapid character development and undermines the reader's sense of reality. Dialogue is similarly strained as the author hastens to reveal character, conflict, and resolution before the buzzer sounds. Although Burchard's collection is ill suited to the demands of professional theater, the scope of characters permits a diversity in performance and would prove a worthwhile exercise in a classroom setting.
