Translated by Major-General John Garstin. Frisi "did work in hydraulics and was called upon to plan works for the regulation of rivers and canals in various parts of northern Italy. He was responsible for laying out the canal built in 1819 between Milan and Pavia. The translation was prepared by John Garstin, chief engineer in Bengal at the time of the restoration of the Jumna canals. Frisi (1728-84), was an ardent admirer of Newton and wrote important works on mathematics, physics, astronomy, and hydraulics. An editor of Il Caffè, a newspaper that was influenced by the thought of the French Illuminati, Frisi exerted a notable effect on the cultural, social, and political life of Milan in the later part of the 18th century. Paper title label on front cover and to spine. Front cover appears to have been creased previously, mark on rear cover. Label on spine incomplete. Small booksellers label on front paste down.
